Why the board is a financial document
Occupancy is the single biggest driver of residential revenue.
An empty bed earns nothing and costs the same as a full one. Which makes "how many do we have open tonight" the most valuable question in the building — and the one a spreadsheet answers wrong most often.

When a referring hospital calls at 4pm, the intake coordinator can say yes or no immediately, including which beds match the patient's gender, acuity, and level of care.
Billing
Bed-days build the claim
Per-diem and case-rate claims are constructed from the census. When the board and the claim come from one source, the bed-day count does not have to be reconciled by hand.
Placement is clinical
Who is roomed with whom is a treatment decision, not a housekeeping one.
Acuity, gender, observation level, and history all bear on placement — which is why the board belongs on the same record as the chart rather than on a laminated sheet at the nursing station.
